Reginald Hopetoun Arney was born on the 23rd of July in 1894, in Woodside. South Australia. Prior to enlistment he worked as a Farmer at various locations north of Adelaide and in the Riverland.
At the age of 21 he enlisted to the Australian Imperial Force on the 15th of March 1916, followed by basic training at Mitcham.
On the 11 of April Reginald boarded the HMAT Aeneas at Adelaide bound for the Middle East. After some further training he proceeded to France and was taken on strength with 4th Australian Division Signals Company.
