Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board

Leslie John BROWN (Service Number 2579) was born on 24 August 1896 at Waverley in Sydney. He commenced working with the NSW Railways as a junior clerk I the Traffic Auditors Branch, at the age of 17, in December 1913. He remained in this role until just before his 19th birthday when he was released to join the Expeditionary Forces and enlisted on 16 August 1915 at Warwick Farm.
He left Australia through Sydney on HMAT ‘Euripides’ on 2 November 1915. He reached Tel-el-Kebir in Egypt on 14 February 1916 and was taken on the strength of the 4th Battalion and briefly served at Gallipoli for the final six weeks of that campaign. He then embarked at Alexandria and travelled to France through Marseilles. While a sea he was disciplined for insolence to a non-commissioned officer.
He was killed in action, at Pozières between 22 and 27 July 1916. Initially he was buried 3½ miles N.E of Albert but in the post-war rationalisation of cemeteries his remains were moved to Pozières British Cemetery Ovillers-La Boiselle, Picardie, France.
In 1921 his mother moved from Leichhardt to Willoughby and named her new house ‘Pozières’.
