Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, have I been forgotten?

57 years ago today, on the 2nd November 1964, Private Henry Victor Prince, 45th Battalion (Reg No-3112A), bricklayer from Upper Street, Tamworth, New South Wales and Hamilton? N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 71. ANGLICAN 3-215. 19.

Born at Tamworth, New South Wales on the 6th February 1893 to Henry (Harry) and Jane Prince of Upper Street, Tamworth, N.S.W.; husband of Ruby H I Prince nee Cahill (married 1924, Wickham, N.S.W., died?), Henry enlisted July 1915 with the 13th Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 21.2.1917 (GSW arm, mild), 9.8.1918 (GSW right shoulder, thigh, severe).

Henry was invalided home January 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 23rd February 1919.

Mr. Prince’s name has been inscribed on the Tamworth Public School First World War Roll of Honor.

I located Henry resting in an unmarked grave, maybe forgotten, so May 2021 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated as I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip to restore Honour and Dignity to Henry.

Lest We Forget.
