He was 31 and the son of James and Annie Lewis, of Hilton, South Australia.

An original member of the 10th Light Horse Regiment John was killed during the famous charge at the Nek on Gallipoli 7 August 1915. His father stated on the Roll of Honour form that, "He was a good rifle shot and won prizes at rifle matches; he was a totle (sic) abstainer and didn't smoke."

John was one of four brothers who enlisted, 2 died during the Pozieres fighting in France during 1916, Charles Stephen and Archie Gordon Lewis. A third brother James Walter Lewis, returned to Australia for discharge on account of three of his brothers having been killed in the war.
