Albert Michel

Albert applied to WAGR and passed the Selection Board on 17 May 1910 and was passed on his medical board on 30 May. He started work on 13 June as an apprentice boilermaker at Midland Junction with a daily wage of 1/6 (one shilling and sixpence) and when finished his apprenticeship in November 1915, he was earning 40/- (forty shillings – two pounds) a day. Then as a qualified boilermaker his daily wage dropped to 12/- (twelve shillings), he possibly decided to enlist in the A.I.F; so took paid leave (22 Nov. to1 Dec.) and he applied to the WAGR for leave to enlist, which was granted on 2 December 1915.

After arriving in England he was marched into Bulford Camp and on the 16 November 1916 was taken on the strength of 8th Field Artillery Brigade, 3rd Division Artillery, and proceeded to France on 30 December 1916 and remained until the end of the war.
Admitted to hospital in March 1917 for five days and rejoined his unit thereafter; the 8th F.A.B. was in action in Belgium at the Battle of Messines in June and was during the battle on 15 June 1917. On discharge on 7 July from hospital he re-joined his unit and later in October appointed Acting Bombardier (T/Bdr., 13 November). In August 1918 promoted T/Corporal and full Corporal in 1919, he returned to Australia on 4 November 1919 and was discharged, later receiving the British War Medal and Victory Medal in 1922.

Albert returned to his old job with WAGR at Midland Junction on 16 November 1919 on a daily wage of 15/6 (fifteen shillings and six pence) and remained with them until his retirement on 1 October 1958. He married Ada Constance Nuttall in 1927 and the notice appeared in The West Australian:-

"NUTTALL. — On April 30, 1927, at St, Matthew's, Guildford by Rev King, Albert Hughes, eldest son Mr. and Mrs. J. Michel, of Gosnells, to Ada Constance, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Nuttall, Perth Street, Bassendean." - from the West Australian 16 Jul 1927
