Flinders was initially rejected by the A.I.F. due to having poor teeth, but eventually left Melbourne on board the Kabinga on 8 May 1916 bound for Egypt where he served for the entirety of the war with the 1st Light Horse. He was admitted to hospital on 1 June 1917 with abrasions to the hands, incurred during action. Prior to leaving Egypt at the war’s end, Flinders was hospitalised in Cairo with rheumatism on 26 January 1919. He returned to Australia from Suez on the Demosthenes a month later on 28 February and was discharged on 18 May. Flinders died on 20 November 1952.
