4730 Sgt William Anderson MM and Bar, 14 Battalion (15 Reinforcement Group). Farmer, n.o.k. wife Mrs Margaret M Anderson, Warrnambool. Enlisted 21 August 1915, aged 21, Warrnambool. Embarked HMAT A68 Anchises on 4 March 1916. Transferred to 46 Battalion. Awarded the Military Medal, gazetted 11 December 1918:

“At Sailly le Sec, NE of Corbie, on the night of 7-8 July 1918 this NCO showed great initiative and courage in directing the fighting patrols that were out whilst the objective was being consolidated. He attacked and captured five Germans during his patrolling. The good work done by this NCO kept the enemy MG fire down and enabled the position to be consolidated with very few casualties.”

Awarded a Bar to the MM, gazetted 11 February 1919:

“For good work and devotion to duty as a scout during the attack east of Hamel on the morning of 8 August 1918. Cpl Anderson was acting as Company Scout and successfully reconnoitred Lena Wood and Susan Wood. The information gained by this NCO led to the capture of three field guns and numerous prisoners from the woods above mentioned. This NCO carried out his reconnaissance under heavy fire, utterly regardless of his personal safety. His actions throughout the operations were of the highest order and he set a fine example to the other men around him.”

Promoted Sergeant on 1 October 1918. Returned to Australia, embarking on 10 April 1919 on HMT Medic.
