Age at the time of arrival in Australia is given as 50 years but his age at the time of embarkation is given as 43 years. On his Attestation paper his age is given as 40 years and 5 months at the time of enlistment.

Also served in the Royal Marines for 21 years. He served in the Egyptian War of 1882 where he was awarded the Khedives Bronze Star and the Queen Victoria's Medal as well as the long service and good conduct medal
