76 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 1st June 1948, Private Frederick Thomas Barker, Australian General Base Depot (13th Battalion, Reg Nos 6920 & 53692), gasman from "Barkerville", 30 Waratah Road, Broadmeadow, New South Wales and 37 Roe Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., father of two (Fred & Ron), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 54. ANGLICAN 1-28A. 86.

Born at Hamilton, New South Wales on the 15th October 1893 to Frederick Josiah, died 8.8.1901, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 41, buried at ANGLICAN 1-31. 18, from 45 Hunter Street West, Newcastle, New South Wales, and Charlotte Barker nee Turner, died 14.1.1924, Newcastle Hospital, N.S.W., age 57, mother of 9, sleeping at ANGLICAN 1-31. 18, from "Barkerville", 30 Waratah Road, Broadmeadow, New South Wales; husband of Katherine Barker nee Nesbitt (married 1921, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 18.9.1963, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 70, sleeping here), Fred enlisted on the 16th June 1917 with the 19th Battalion, Reg No-6920, at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A16 Port Melbourne on the 16th July 1917.

Failed to re-embark at Fremantle, Western Australia 23.7.1917.

Posted as deserter 3.8.1917.

Embarked at Sydney 19.6.1918.

Admitted to ship's hospital 1.7.1918 (influenza).

Commenced return to Australia 1.7.1919.

Fred arrived home on the 20th August 1919, being discharged on the 5th September 1919.

Mr. Barker’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor and the Hamilton St. Peter's Anglican Church Honor Roll.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Fred’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Younger brother William Bertie (born 18.2.1895, Broadmeadow, New South Wales, smelter worker from "Barkerville", 30 Waratah Road, Broadmeadow, New South Wales, enlisted 27.8.1915, 20th Battalion, Reg No-3754, KIA 8.7.1918, age 23 years 5 months, resting at Longueau British Cemetery, France. Plot 2 Row A Grave 4) memorialised at parent's gravesite at the cemetery. ANGLICAN 1-31. 18.
