On 9th March 1916 he joined the 48 th Battalion at Tel-el- Kebiro, Egypt and proceeded to join B.E.F. at Alexandria where he boarded the HMAT ‘Calendonia’ for Marseilles France, disembarking on 9 June 1916.

Hayes was wounded in action in Frances on 14 August 1916 and admitted to the 7 th A.F.A. with shellshock. He rejoined his unit 25 August 1916 but was wounded in action on 8 April 1917 and admitted to the 9 th C.C.S. with gunshot wound to the shoulder. He was transferred to the 8 th General Hospital at Rouen on 10 th and embarked from Havre for England aboard the N.S. Warilda on 17 th April and was admitted to the Royal Victoria Hospital.

He was granted furlough on 25 May 1917 and was back in Southampton a month later bound for France on 25 June before marching to Belgium. He arrived in Havre on 24 th July to join his unit. He was reported missing in action on 12 October 1917 at Passchendale, Ypres and subsequently confirmed as killed in action.
