3145 Private William Henry Raines, had enlisted in 1915, only 19 years old, and arrived in Egypt with the 14th Battalion in early 1916. His parents Henry and Margaret had both given their consent for him to enlist. He was transferred to the 46th Battalion, and arrived in France in June 1916. His father enlsted in Melbourne during August 1916 and died of illness in hospital shortly after. William was wounded in action at Bullecourt, on the 10 April 1917, with multiple shrapnel wounds to his arms and left leg and he died 10 days later, 20 April 1917, in a hospital in Rouen. He is buried in the St Sever Cemetery Extension Rouen.
