Biography contributed by Tim Hanna

Winfred Rex Porter (known as Rex) was born in North Adelaide, South Australia on 17 October 1890. His family moved to Mannum, South Australia.

At the age of 24, Rex Porter enlisted on 20 September 1915 and was allocated to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade. He attended the Signal School in Melbourne and then embarked for Europe on the 'Borda' on 20 October 1916. Prior to leaving Australia, Porter married Florence Eva Phillips in 1916.

After arriving in England, Porter undertook training in Larkhill before deploying to France in June 1917.

Porter was gassed in October 1917 while serving in Belgium. His wounds required a significant period of recuperation and he did not return to his unit until 19 July 1918.

Porter was promoted to Bombardier on 25 October 1918 and then to Temporary Sergeant on 25 February 1919 while waiting to be shipped home, the war having concluded on 11 November 1918.

Porter returned to Australia in June 1919 before being discharged on 14 September 1919.

When World War II broke out, Porter re-enlisted and served in Australia from 27 March 1941 to 17 November 1943.  Porter's son, Geoff Winfred Porter, also served during World War II as an Able Seaman in the Royal Australian Navy.
