93 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 24th March 1932, Sapper Charles Estaway Hunt, 9th Australian Field Company Engineers (Reg No-9890), shoemaker from 9 Union Street, Wickham, New South Wales, father of two (Edna C, born 1898, Gunnedah, N.S.W., Zeta P, born 1900, Gunnedah, N.S.W.), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 58. CATHOLIC 1-30. 2.

Born at Tenterfield, New South Wales on the 14th January 1874 to Samuel John, died 11.5.1939, Tamworth, N.S.W., age 82, and Mary Rebecca Hunt nee Streeting, died 4.8.1934, Tamworth, N.S.W., age 73, mother of 9; husband of Clara (Clancy) Jane Hunt nee O'Brien, married 1895, Gunnedah, N.S.W., died 20.3.1950, Merriwa, N.S.W., age 73, sleeping here, Charles enlisted on the 3rd April 1916 at Rosebery Park Camp, Sydney, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A31 Ajana on the 5th July 1916.

Admitted to hospital 6.9.1916 (neuritis).

Commenced return to Australia 13.2.1917.

Charles arrived home on the 14th April 1917, being discharged medically unfit on the 19th July 1917.

Mr. Hunt’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1) and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Charles’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Not officially commemorated.

Also served Boer War, New South Wales Citizens’ Bushmen-352 days.
