Ernest Winter was born in Bowden, South Australia, on the 22nd of September, 1885. He lived most his life on 12 Molesworth Street, North Adelaide. Ernest Winter's mother was Mary Jane Winter and his father was Augustus William Winter. Earnest was a religious man and he followed Methodism. Before Ernest went to serve his country in the war, he was a farm labourer. He was a hardworking man who worked long days. Ernest never had a wife before he entered the war and never made it out to get himself a wife after the war.

Ernest Clifton Winter embarked for war when he was 29 years old. He embarked with a unit from Adelaide, South Australia, on board RMS Morea on the 26 August 1915. Ernest enlisted to serve for his country on the 27 April 1915. The unit to which Ernest was assigned was the 16th Battalion and then later posted to the 8th Reinforcement. Once Ernest enrolled to join the army, he received a regimental number from the nominal roll, which was 2605. He spent his time in the Australian Imperial Force. Ernest served in France through his time in the war.

Ernest served in the war for the last two years of his life from 29 years old to 31. He was killed in action aged 31 on 6 February 1917. His final resting place, where he took his final breaths fighting for his country, is Beaucourt, France. Ernest’s last unit was the 16th Infantry Battalion.  The place of his burial is Bancourt British Cemetery (Plot VII, Row J, Grave no. 12), France. His panel and roll honour number is 81. Ernest is and will always be remembered as a brave soldier. May he rest in peace.
