James Frederick Lenehy was killed by a shell which hit his trench on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. The 8th Battalion was in the line near Messines in Belgium at the time.

His younger brother, 3807 Pte. George Daniel Lenehy 60th Battalion AIF was killed in action 18 days later at Fromelles on the 19 July 1916, aged only 19.

Another brother, 2855 Sergeant Joseph Alexander Leheny 37th Battalion AIF, enlisted at 21 and survived the war, returning to Australia in July 1919.
