Sergeant James Edward Flanagan (Service No:VX105397) first enlisted in the Militia (Private; Service No:V40539) attached to 24th Battalion. On 10 October 1941 he transferred to the ACMF and was a Corporal attached to 39th Battalion in New Guinea when he enlisted 'in the field" in the AIF. Corporal Flanagan served in New Guinea - 27 December 1941 to 14 March 1943 and 19 December 1944 to 2 December 1945. He was a Sergeant attached to 2/2 Battalion when he was WiA on 7 April 1943 and was with 39th Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged on 30 April 1946.
Born in 1912 in St Kilda, Melbourne Victoria, Jack was the fifth of twelve children of George Thomas Flanagan (b1870 in Rokewood nr Ballarat, Victoria) and second wife Ellen (Essie) Louisa Harms (b1891 in Myrtlewood, Victoria). George was a Bricklayer in Melbourne when he and Essie formally married in Melbourne in 1941.
Jack worked as a Labourer in Myrtleford, Indi and Melbourne Victoria and was a Lime Picker when he enlisted in the Militia in 1939. Following his service in WWII, Jack returned to Melbourne and was working as a Lime Grader in 1948 when he married Elva Janet Yates (b1915 in Greensborough, Victoria) - Elva was a Teacher in Melbourne.
Jack and Elva settled in Melbourne, Victoria where they raised their family and Jack worked as a Lime Grader and Clicker (cuts the uppers for boots and shoes). Elva died in Melbourne in 2001 and Jack died in Wonthaggi in 2012,
