One of three brothers who served in WWI, Private William John Williams (Service No:3498) enlisted in the AIF at Blackboy Hill on 29 July 1915 with No 18 Depot Coy, and was attached to 11th Infantry Battalion on 2 November 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Fremantle for Gallipoli on board HMAT A38 Ulysses. On 5 June 1916 Private Williams was attached to 51st Infantry Battalion when he embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles, and was KiA at Pozierres in the Somme Valley on 5 July 1916.
Born in Monmouthsire, Wales in 1880, William was eldest of seven children of William Williams Snr (b1856 in Monmouthshire, Wales) and Margaret Frances (b1856 in Monmouthshire, Wales). William Snr (a Coal Miner/Hewer) and Margaret married in 1875 in Monmouthshire, where they settled and raised their family and William Snr was a Coal Miner. In 1909, William and three of his four sons (Ivor remained in Wales) immigrated, arriving in Fremantle on board the Orsova. Margaret and their daughters followed in 1910, arriving in Fremantle on board the Ormuz. William Snr and Margaret settled in Collie, where they raised their family and William and his sons worked as Coal Miners.
