James Garrett was born in June 1896, Outtrim Victoria. He was the son of Anthony Garrett.

He enlisted on the 29th of December 1914, at the age of eighteen years and six months. He disembarked for his journey from Melborne, Victoria, Australia. He last served with the seventh battalion, fourth reinforcement. The 7th battalion was among the first infantry units raised for the AIF (Australian Imperial Force) during the First World War. Just like 5th, 6th and 8th Battalions, they were recruited from Victoria and, together they formed the 2nd Brigade.

James Garrett was killed in action on May 29th 1915, a month before his nineteenth birthday. His rank was Private and his service number was 1755 at his time of death. He was buried at Shrapnel valley cemetery , Anzac Gallipoli, plot 2 row D grave 18.
