Edwin or Ewen George McAskil was the son of Donald and Jessie McAskil, of Coburg, Victoria. His mother had passed away during 1913. He was the only survivor of four soldier sons, two who died in France in 1917 and 1918, and one who died as a POW of the Japanese in 1945.
His older brother, 1643 Pte. Allan Douglas McAskil 14th Battalion AIF, was killed in action near Gueudecourt, France, on 5 February 1917, aged 22.
Another brother, 3651 Driver Angus Archibald McAskil 5th Machine Gun Battalion AIF, was later killed in action in France on 17 July 1918, aged 33.
Another brother, WX8261 Private Robert Ramsay McAskil 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion 2/AIF, died of beri-beri when a prisoner of war on 28 March 1945, aged 44.
Edwin was wounded in action at Pozieres in August 1916 and returned to Australia during March 1919.
