Biography contributed by John Edwards

"Keith Watt was born in 1893 in Victoria. His father was listed as  Joseph Crane Watt & his mother was Millicent Petersen, and at the time of Keith’s enlistment the family were living at Kellerberrin. Keith attended the School from 1906 to 1908 as a Boarder. During his time at the School Keith won prizes for French, Geography and Divinity and was awarded an Honourable Mention for Exam Work. Keith also played in the 1st XVIII in 1908 alongside other fellow Gallipoli Heroes Wilfred Harper, Dudley Lukin and Malcolm Teesdale Smith. It was recorded in the Swan as being an “unsuccessful year”. The loss of all records of the matches prevented a fuller account.

Keith’s older brother Charles known as Charlie, also attended from 1906-1907.

Keith enlisted in the 3rd Reinforcements, 10th Light Horse on 4th January 1915 at Blackboy Hill with the rank of Private. At that time he was single and his occupation was listed as farmer. His brother Charlie had also enlisted at the same time. Keith was described as being 5 feet 8 inches high and weighed 140 pounds. His complexion was fair with blue eyes and fair hair. He had three vaccination scars on his left arm. Keith embarked from Fremantle on the HMAT Itonus on 19th February 1915.

Keith embarked for Gallipoli from Alexandria on 16th May 1915. He was reported to have contracted measles on the 17th and was transferred to the Island of Lemnos by fleet sweeper. He returned for duty on 9th July and was killed on 11th July aged 21. According to his brother Charlie Keith was buried near the beach at night and Wilfred and Gresley Harper were amongst those present.

Charlie made it safely back to Australia and was discharged on 25th June 1917." - SOURCE (www.ggs.wa.edu.au)
