Arthur was the third of five children of Arthur Frederick Maxwell (born 1870 in Maryborough, QLD) and Isabella Bain (born 1871 in Maryborugh, QLD). Arthur Snr was a Striker and Miner in Marybourough and married Isabella in 1891. In 1909 the family moved to Brisbane, QLD where Arthur Snr was a Labourer when he enlsisted in the AIF in 1915.
Athur was living in Brisbane and working as a Bedstead Maker when he enlisted in the AIF in July 1915. He was a Private (Service No:3357) with 11th Reinforcements 9th Infantry Battalion and 30th Infantry Battalion. Arthur was announced Missing in Action at Fromelles on 21 July 1916, and following an Inquiry in 1917 he was declared Killed in Action on 20 July 1916. In the Red Cross Society Wounded and Missing Enquiry Bureau Files, J W Hughes states on 30 January 1917 "We were in the same Coy together. The Battalion (30) had official notification that he is a Prisoner of War in Germany, He was taken during the charge of July 19th at Fromelles'. Captain Jim A Chapman states in a letter on 30 December 1916 that Arthur was 'last seen in No Man's Land'. Arthur's father - Arthur Frederick (Lance Corporal, Service No:1269) also served in 30th Infantry Battalion, and brothers Charles (Garf) Herbert (Stoker, Service No:2233) and Victor Alexander (Private, Service No:3683) also served in WWI.
Arthur's body was not recovered and (family member greerwhite) stated in 2012 (ancestry.com.au) that 'family DNA is registered in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra Unrecovered War Casualties Data Base'.
