Son of Frederick George D'Ombrain and Maude Mary D'Ombrain nee Lewis of 'Luccombe', Tennyson Street, St Kilda, Victoria. 

Brother of John Norton D'Ombrain who returned to Australia on 18 May 1919 having served with the 9th Field Ambulance.

On 8 January 1919 Ray married Ethel Mary Preece in the Parish Church, Monmouth, England. Vicar A.E. Monahan officiated.

Commenced return to Australia on 23 July 1919 aboard HT Canberra disembarking on 11 September 1919
