Len was the eldest of seven children of James Alderson Howson (b1876 in Durham, England) and Minnie Mary Ann Ballard (b1879 in Adelaide, South Australia). James (a Painter) and Minnie married in 1897 in Fremantle WA. James had arrived in Fremantle WA with his mother and siblings in 1880 on board the Robert Morrison and Minnie had lived in Albany WA since 1887. James and Minnie lived in Fremantle and Kalgoorlie before settling in Perth WA where James was a Painter.

Len was working as a Horse Driver in Victoria Park, Perth WA when he served in the Militia in 1915 (Private; Service No:1824) with 88th Infantry Battalion. In July 1916 he enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:3013) and served with 51st Infantry Battalion in France. Len was in France when he was Court Martialed on 1 November 1917 - charged when on active service deserting HMS from 10 October 1917 to 21 October 1917. He was sentenced to ten years penal service in a Military Prison in France - commuted to two years. Len was released on 18 November 1918 and rejoined his unit. He was Discharged in May 1919.

In 1920 Len was back in Perth, WA working as a Horse Driver when he married Theresa Martha Harriet Upton-Medley (b1900 in Fremantle WA). Len and Theresa lived in Perth and Fremantle where Len worked as a Horse Driver and Labourer. Len died in 1950 and Theresa remarried - she died in 1973.
