Brother of Howard Milton Oates who returned to Australia on 8 February 1919 having served with the 10th Battalion; Eric Edwin Oates who returned to Australia on 10 December 1917 having served with the 15th Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 8 October 1915 aboard HT Suevic disembarking on 19 November 1915
