Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Richard Thomas Carroll of Irishtown, Tasmania was the son of Dennis Patrick and Ann Carroll. On 4 September 1916 he was killed in action at Mouquet Farm in the Pozieres area of France, while serving with the 52nd Battalion. The fact that his cousin, 4469 Thomas Richard Carroll, also of Irishtown, was also killed in the same action with the 52nd Battalion, caused some confusion with their identities. Both were first reported as missing.

Richard was known as ‘Dick’ and several eye witness accounts reported he was hit in the head by a sniper and killed instantly. He was confirmed during April 1917 as killed in action on 4 September 1916.

His mother and father both passed away during 1929 and his elder brother Patrick received his British War Medal during 1933.
