Biography contributed

Born 1 June 1895, the son of Thomas Carrington and Margaret (Douglas) Campbell, he was educated at The Geelong College from 1905 to 1913.  He was an outstanding sportsman, being in the 1st XV111 Australian Rules from 1911-1913, 1st X1 cricket from 1910-13 and the athletics team in 1913.

Percy enlisted on 5 February 1915, embarking for Egypt with 21 Battalion on HMAT A38 Ulysses on 8 May 1915, then proceeding to Gallipoli with HQ Company as a stretcher bearer.  He was there until the evacuation when he embarked for France with his Battalion.

In France, Percy was transferred to 24 Battalion and suffered shell shock on 6 August 1916 at Pozieres Heights.  He served through the remainder of the campaign on the Western Front, taking leave to England in January 1918.

While in London he was charged with failure to salute an officer of His Majesty’s Forces, resulting in the forfeiture of three days pay.

Percy returned to Australia, embarking on 28 March 1919 on HMT Port Macquarie.

Percy’s younger brother Reginald Neil Campbell, born 25 May 1899 enlisted in the AIF on 13 March 1918 and embarked for England on 8 May 1918 and was posted to 7th Training Squadron of the AFC.  Reginald returned to Australia and he died in 1966.
