Biography
"Motoring Tragedy. FUNERAL OF THE VICTIMS. Returned Soldiers Tribute
After the adjournment of the Inquest the bodies of the victims of the South Mount Cameron motoring fatality, Walter Leslie Whitmore and his son Lindsay Whitmore, were conveyed to the residence of Mr. John Whitmore of Pioneer, who is a brother or the deceased. On Tuesday afternoon, at about 3.30 the funeral left Pioneer for the Moorina Cemetery. The cortege was one of the largest and most representative seen in this district for some years. The chief mourners were John, George and Arthur Whitmore, brothers; and William Whitmore of Winnaleah, uncle. The pall-bearers, namely Messrs W. Farrell, R. Thorne, R. Turner and H. E. Spotswood, were all members of the A.I.F. There was also present representatives of the Ringarooma Council, The Returned Soldiers' Association, and the Derby Football Club of which the late Mr. Walter Whitmore was a member. The hearse was laden with beautiful floral tributes received from all parts of the North East Coast. The service at the graveside was conducted by Rev. A. E. Biggs, Rector, of Derby. Mr. H. E. Spotswood on behalf of the Returned Soldiers present made reference to the distinguished service of Sergeant Whitmore, who for great gallantry was awarded a D.C.M. at Dernacourt. He extended the sympathy of the returned soldiers to the bereaved relatives who were mourning one who had gone to join the big battalion of fallen comrades already mustered on the other shore." - from the Scottsdale North Eastern Advertiser 31 Jan 1930 (nla.gov.au)
