Albert Toll Mason was born in Bendigo, the son of Charles & Nancy Eliza Mason, of 226 Barnard Street (on the corner of Forest street), Bendigo. Albert was a Boot-maker, and had previously served 6 months in an apprenticeship to Abbott & Co of Bendigo. He was 19 years & 6 months old and had previous military service in the Australian Navy. He was amongst the early volunteers for the Expeditionary Force, enlisting on 18.8.14. The following day he left Bendigo for the Broadmeadows Camp. He was allotted Service no. 807 and appointed to ‘G’ Company, 7th Battalion.
The 7th Battalion left Broadmeadows Camp on 18 October, 1914, and embarked for service overseas on board HMAT ‘Hororata’. Arriving in Egypt the battalion moved into camp at Mena, at the foot of the pyramids. (6/12/14)
In January, 1915, the Australian force was re-organized. In the 7th Battalion ‘G’ and ‘H’ Companies joined to form the new ‘D’ Company. This meant that all the men from Northern Victoria were together in one Company.
The 7th Battalion was part of the force which landed at Anzac Cove on 25th April, 1915. Albert survived the Landing and also participated in the “2nd Battle of Krithia” at Cape Helles in May.
On July 2nd the 7th Battalion received orders to move into the trenches of the Left sub-section of Steele’s Post. Most of their days were spent sniping at the Enemy’s loopholes. They repaired the trenches during the night. They were bombarded with shrapnel & high explosive shells, men were being buried by shell explosions, and suffering shock concussion.
Albert Mason was Wounded (5th-6th July) sustaining a shrapnel wound in the arm and suffering from shock. He rejoined the battalion on 21/7/15.
On 5/8/15 he was appointed Acting L/Cpl.
On August 8th the 7th Battalion moved into position at Lone Pine, preparing to participate in a Diversionary attack on the Turkish trenches on the 400 Plateau. ‘D’ Company, under Lieut. W. J. Symons, was on the left, manning the line from Wood’s Post to Goldenstedt’s Post. Heavy fighting ensued with multiple casualties.
Albert Mason was Wounded (2nd occasion) on 8/8/15, sustaining a Bomb wound to his left forearm. He RTA M.U. on 29/8/15.
