Sid was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1926, seventh of eight children of Ethelbert (Bert) Dale (b1890 in Brighton, Victoria) and Lucy Olive Follan (b1890 in Strathfield, New South Wales). Bert was a Tanner in Sydney in 1910 when he and Lucy married in Adelong. They settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Bert worked as a Tanner.
