Lewis was the second of nine children of George Andrew Towson (b1853 in Perth, WA) and second wife Dagmar Frances Alexanra Lambley (b1868 in Sydney, NSW). George (a Horse Trainer and Jockey) and Dagmar married in 1885 in Perth WA. George was a pioneer of WA thoroughbred racing (the GA Towton Cup still runs today in homage to his contribution to racing in WA). George started as a Jockey when he was fifteen years of age, and went on to be a Breeder, Trainer, and Owner as well as a Jockey. George had married Dagmar's older sister Catherine in 1876 in Perth, and following her death in 1884 married younger sister Dagmar. In the 1890s George built the Racecourse Hotel, which was also the family home stables) and in 1906 was killed when he fell from his horse drawn sulky whilst crossing the Swan River. Dagmar remarried Septimus Dyson.
Lewis lived with older brother Harry in Belmont, Perth WA and worked as a Carter, Driver and Horse Trainer. In 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF, he gave his occupation in his Attestation Papers as Potter. Lewis served (Private, Corporal, Sergeant) with 11th and 51st Infantry Battalions in France - where he was WiA on two occasions (GSW - fractured wrist - and Gassed). In October 1917 he completed the 37th Army Course in Physical and Bayonet Instruction and was transferred to 1st Australian Convalescent Depot. Lewis was Discharged in August 1919.
Returning to Perth WA. Lewis was a Horse Trainer in 1919 when he married Eva Ethel Haydon (b1896 in Chidlow Wells, WA). The couple settled in Perth where Lewis worked as a Horse Trainer. From the mid 1920s until his death, Harry listed his occupation as 'Soldier' in the Electoral Rolls. Eva died in 1966 and Lewis in 1970.
