Today, We Stop and Pause to Remember - Fred Thompson 1875-1915
Frederick John (Fred) Thompson was born on 9 October 1875 in Greytown, Wellington, New Zealand. He was the son of Richard John Thompson (1841-1929) and Maria Josephine Butler (1847-1941). Fred had one brother and five sisters.
Age 39, he enlisted in Warwick on 22 August 1914 with the 1st. Australian Expeditionary Force. His battalion embarked from Brisbane on the HMAT Omrah on 24 September 1914. They took on strength in Alexandria, Egypt before leaving for the Gallipoli campaign on 2 March 1915.
Fred was part of the B Coy, VIII Platoon, 16th Section, they were among the first to land on the beach at Gallipoli at 4 o’clock on the morning of Sunday, 25 April 1915. Fred was Killed in Action and has no known grave – "Known Unto God". RIP.
