"LIEUTENANT OSCAR ROY HOWIE, M.C.

Lieutenant Oscar Roy Howie, who has been awarded the Military Cross, was born at McLaren Vale in 1886, and was educated at the local school. As a youth he proceeded with his parents to Collie, Western Australia, and worked in the coal mines there. Soon after he left for England, where he spent three years in study, and finined his mining degree. He then returned to Collie to take up a position as mine manager. He came to South Australia to enlist, and he departed for the front in February, 1916, as a second lieutenant in the Mining Corps, Australian Engineers. He was promoted to first lieutenant in July, and is now acting as a temporary Captain." - from the Adelaide Chronicle 03 Feb 1917 (nla.gov.au)
