Two brothers who served and suffered during The Great War, resting together at Sandgate Cemetery.
75 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 2nd December 1949, Private James May Harman, referred to as Joe, 20th Battalion (Reg No-1087), farmer from 32 & 34 Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 63. ANGLICAN 2-113. 57.
Never married.
Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 8th November 1886 to Joseph Samuel, died 4.7.1930, Newcastle Hospital, N.S.W., age 76, buried at ANGLICAN 1-51. 12, from Perkins Street, Newcastle, N.S.W., and 34 Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Ann Harman nee Blackwell, died 28.12.1905, 55 Perkins Street, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 51, sleeping at ANGLICAN 1-51. 12, Joe enlisted on the 23rd May 1915 with the 19th Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT Ceramic on the 25th June 1915.
Admitted to hospital 15.11.1916 (trench feet, severe), 26.4.1918 (influenza), 30.4.1918 (laryngitis, severe).
Wounded in action - 14.10.1916 (shell wound, lip), 22.9.1917 (GSW left shoulder, mild), 24.7.1918 (gassed, mild).
Invalided to England 10.8.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 2.1.1919.
Joe arrived home on the 17th February 1919 (1915 Leave), being discharged on the 16th April 1919.
Mr. Harman’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill St. John's Anglican Church Honor Roll and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at Joe’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

There were another 3 Harman family members who were living at 32 Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales who served with the 1st A.I.F.
Younger brother Private Francis Charles Harman, Frank, born 30.9.1891, Newcastle, New South Wales, labourer from 32 Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales, enlisted 21.6.1915, 1st Battalion, Reg No-2593, RTA 21.5.1919, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion, died 18.7.1961, Hamilton, N.S.W. as Frank, age 69, not officially commemorated, unknown place of burial or cremation.
Older brother Private Arthur George Harman, born 31.3.1882, Newcastle, New South Wales, labourer from 32 Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales, enlisted 27.6.1915, 2nd Battalion, Reg No-2824, RTA 18.7.1916 (deafness), 54th Battalion, died 23.12.1945, age 63, not officially commemorated.
Older brother Private Walter Edward Harman, born 15.1.1874, Newcastle, New South Wales, gas main & service layer (Newcastle Gas & Coke Company Limited), from 32 & 34 Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales, enlisted 26.9.1914, an Original Anzac, 1st Battalion, Reg No-1151, wounded in action - 12.5.1915 (GSW scalp), 22.5.1915 (GSW thigh, slight), admitted to hospital 18.7.1916 (neurasthenia, or severe fatigue, slight), RTA 12.4.1917, 53rd Battalion, died 17.2.1932, age 58, not officially commemorated, resting at Sandgate Cemetery with brother Joe. ANGLICAN 2-113. 57.
