Barrington Earl Flint
Flint was mobilised on 31 January 1941 with the 3rd Battalion (militia) and marched into camp in October 1941. He arrived in Papua in May 1942 and on 5 September 1942 entered the Kokoda track in 1942 as a member of 10 Platoon, B Company, 3 Battalion. Flint was promoted to Sergeant in October 1942 shortly after the fight with the Japanese at Templetons Crossing. He also fought at Oivi and Gona before returning to Australia in January 1943. He enlisted in the AIF at Herberton, Queensland on 15 March 1943 and during the first half of the year was treated several times for bouts of malaria. Flint was transferred to the 2/3 Battalion in July 1943 and reverted to the rank of Private at his own request. After a long period of training he and his unit were sent to Aitape in New Guinea in December 1944 where the 2/3 Battalion were involved in fighting the Japanese along the coast to Wewak. He was discharged in May 1945 because he was required for employment in an 'essential occupation'. Flint had joined the CSIR in 1939 and worked with the organisation until his retirement in 1979 as a senior technical officer at the Ginninderra Experimental Station. He had rejoined the CSIR after his war service and worked at the Dickson Experimental Station until 1958 (when it was closed to allow for the development of Downer) when he was appointed as overseer at Ginninderra. He died on 6 October 1989.
