Biography

Son of Horace BAINES and Grace nee RICHARDS

Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Baines embarked from Australia on the HMAT A60 Aeneas on April 11, 1916. Upon arrival, he was assigned to the 13th Training Battalion (stationed in Egypt) to prepare for war. On May 27, 1916, he joined the 50th Infantry Battalion which became a part of the 13th Brigade of the 4th Australian Division. Shortly after he embarked from Alexandria on June 7, 1916, to join the British Expeditionary Force (B.E.F) primarily located on the Western Front in France and Belgium. He arrived in France, at Marseilles on 41 June 1916.

He was promoted to Acting Sergeant 1st March 1917 until 21st June 1917 when he reverted back to ER Corporal. Baines was transferred to 4th Australian Division Headquarters in August 1917. In December 1917 he reverted to Private only to return to ER Sergeant rank in February 1918. In June 1918 he reverted to the rank of Private

On September 14, 1918, he was wounded in action from a gunshot wound (G.S.W) which could also refer to a general shrapnel wound. Baines was later admitted to a hospital in England five days later on the 19th of September. He was mostly likely injured in the minor engagements that led up to the Hindenburg "outpost line" push on the 18th of September. He was later retransferred back to the 50th Battalion on November 20, 1918.

On July 1, 1919, he left England, returning to Australia. He was discharged 10th October 1919

Baines died on March 4, 1978, of natural causes and was cremated on March 6, 1978. He was ultimately buried at Centennial Park Cemetery, South Australia.
