Alexander LINDSAY (Service Number 8844) was born on 17th July 1888 at Alexandria, Sydney. He began working for the NSW Government Railways as a probationer in the Traffic Branch on 8th May 1905. By 1907 he had become a junior porter. He progressed to clerk, posted at Croydon, in August 1909, once he was 21. In 1910 he was at Ashfield. In 1911 had a major relocation to Moree. In 1912 he was the goods clerk at Culcairn. He had relocated, in the same role to Narrandera in 1915. It was from this role that he was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces on 20th July 1915.
Lindsay enlisted at Liverpool three days later. Because he was not married, he gave his father, who was living in Albury as his next of kin. He joined the 14th Miscellaneous Reinforcements, Australian General Hospital, then the 8th Field Ambulance, the 2nd Light Horse and then the 14th Field Ambulance. He embarked on HMAT ‘Ballarat’ in Sydney on 16th February 1916, and reached Zeitoun, Egypt on 23rd March. He was taken on the strength of the 14th Field Ambulance at Ismailia on 28th April.
In June 1916 the Australian Forces moved from Egypt to become part of the British Expeditionary Force in France. Lindsay embarked at Alexandria on 19th June for passage to Marseilles.
In August 1916 he became infected with Influenza but recovered. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 12th March 1917. He was given leave in August 1917.
Soon after his return from leave, on 25th September, he was wounded in action and died of those wounds the same day at the 3rd Australian Field Ambulance.
He was buried at Birr Cross Roads Cemetery, Flanders, Belgium.
