DOYLE, John Gladstone, Service Number - 2523

John Gladstone Doyle, born in 1896, was an Australian soldier who served in the First World War. He was a Roman Catholic born in Wodonga, Victoria, and raised in Lewisham, New South Wales. As a teenager, he attended Sydney Technical High School and was later employed as a warehouseman before he enlisted in the war (1). Before the war, John Gladstone Doyle had a structured and industrious life. He attended Sydney Technical High School in Ultimo from 1911 to 1914 as an average student who didn’t excel much academically. His mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Doyle, was his next of kin, and they lived at 16 Eltham Street, Lewisham, New South Wales. John worked as a warehouseman during his teenage years.

John enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on July 18, 1915, at the age of 19. He embarked from Sydney on October 5, 1915, aboard the HMAT Themistocles.

John took part in the battle of Pozières from July 25 to August 5, 1916 (5). This battle, part of the larger Somme Offensive, was known for its relentless artillery bombardment and intense trench warfare. John was wounded in action on the 8th August 1916 and retrunreed to his Battalion at the end of the month. John was promoted to Corporal 12th October 1916 and 6 weeks later he wounded in action 18th November 1916 with a severe gun shot wound to his left leg and was hospitalised,

On July 21, 1917, John Gladstone Doyle returned to Australia due to his injuries (11). John is commemorated on the Sydney Technical High School WW1 Roll of Honour , which showcased many soldiers of WW1 who attended Sydney Technical High School (12).
