17 Jan 1917:	Embarked AIF WW1, Sapper, 6644, Tunnelling Companies, Embarked on RMS Omrah from Melbourne on 17th January 1917, disembarking Devonport, England on 27th March 1917.
6 Sep 1917:	Promoted AIF WW1, Corporal, Sawyer was also appointed a V.O. (Voyage Only) Sergeant on 17th January 1917, reverting to a Sapper on 27th March 1917 but being appointed an Acting Sergeant on the same day which was withdrawn when he proceeded overseas to France on 9th May 1917.
17 Sep 1917:	Wounded AIF WW1, Corporal, 6644, 1st Anzac Entrenching Battalion, Shell wound to the left leg. Gas burns to head, hands, neck and face
