Samuel's parents were George Buckby and Eliza Hall. Samuel attended North Pine State School. Samuel's father, George was a publican at the North Pine Hotel and the Buckby's owned land which is now where Pine Rivers State High School is. Samuel was living at Joondaryan when he enlisted on 6 March 1916 and was a Schoolteacher. After the war Samuel lived with his mother at Strathpine and continued teaching. Samuel married Janet Mary Gladys Rogers at Brisbane in 1932. Samuel died aged 65.
