Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
65 years ago today, on the 27 June 1960, Private Oscar Henry Spinks, 45th Battalion (Reg No-2446), labourer from Young Street, Quirindi, New South Wales and East Maitland?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 69. ANGLICAN 3-198. 60.
Born at Glen Innes, New South Wales on the 28th June 1890 to Henry Joseph, died 22.8.1923, Granville, N.S.W., age 62, buried at Rookwood General Cemetery, and Angelina Rosa Spinks nee Gardner, died 11.9.1953, Maitland, N.S.W., age 88, mother of 4?, sleeping at ANGLICAN 3-191. 1, buried on the 14.9.1953, no funeral or death notice; husband of Annie Spinks nee Hawkins, married 1921, Murrurundi, N.S.W., died 2.5.1957, Maitland, N.S.W., age 67, sleeping here - https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/190755412/annie-spinks, Oscar enlisted on the 31st May 1915 with the 13th Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on the 20th August 1915.
Admitted to hospital 13.10.1915 (injury to knee cap), 12.3.1919 (influenza, dangerously ill).
Wounded in action - 15.8.1916 (GSW or SW right knee or leg).
Commenced return to Australia 13.7.1919.
Oscar arrived home on the 2nd September 1919, being discharged on the 1st November 1919.
Mr. Spinks’s name has not been inscribed on the Murrurundi and Warrah Shire First World War Roll of Honor, Murrurundi Shire War and Services Honour Roll, Quirindi and Werris Creek First World War Roll of Honor and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at Oscar’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
