Leading Aircraftman John Neil Carlton (Service No:41886) initially served in the ACMF as a Sapper and Corporal (Service No:V34909) with 10 Field Coy RAE - graded Cook (attended Military Cooking School Mooroopna) from 25 September 1940 to 22 July 1941, when he Discharged to enlist in the RAAF. Aircraftman I Carlton enlisted at No 1 Recruiting Centre Melbourne - mustered as Gardener and then as Flight Rigger. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 1 January 1942, he served at HQ Laverton and with 12 Squadron, and was attached to 24 Squadron at Discharge on 13 December 1945.
John Neil Cariss (ka Carlton)was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1915, second of two children of William Cariss (b1885 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Isabella Gertrude Woolley (b1889 in Melbourne, Victoria). William and Isabella divorced in 1918, and Isabella remarried that year to David Neilson Carlton (b1884 at Mt Egerton, Victoria) - together they had four children. David worked at Mt Egerton and Mt Magnet, WA as a Miner and in Melbourne as a Labourer, Carter and Driver before enlisting in the AIF in May 1916 (Private; Service No:2627). Discharged in December that year (medically unfit - fractured foot), David and Isabella married in 1918 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and David worked as a Labourer until his death in 1945.
John was working for Melbourne City Council (Parks and Gardens Dept) initially as a Labourer and then as a Gardener. In 1939 he married Kathleen Winifred Bradley (b1918 in Melbourne, Victoria), and following his Discharge, the couple settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family. John worked for the Melbourne City Council as a Gardener and Market Inspector until his death in 1975. Kathleen died in 1994.
