He was 31 and the son of William and Mary Dalling of Rolle Quay, Barnstaple.

He is one of three Australian soldiers commemorated on the Barnstaple War Memorial. There is also one New Zealand casualty.

The other two Australian soldiers are :

Trooper Stephen William Hunt of the 5th Battalion, the Australian Light Horse. 

Private Percy Thomas Channon of the 21st Battalion, the Australian Infantry Force.
