Son of Mrs Alice Best, Ryot Street, Warrnambool, Victoria
Pte William Thomas McKinney, 29 Battalion (7 Reinforcements). Grocer, single, n.o.k. mother Mrs Alice Best, Ryot Street, Warrnambool. Enlisted 4 February 1916, aged 18, embarked HMAT A35 Berrima on 4 July 1916, killed in action at Bapaume on 23 March 1917, Pte WJ Watt told the Red Cross Information Bureau of his death: “I saw McKinney killed in the village of Beaumetz, which was then used as a base for outpost work. He was killed about 5pm on 23rd March 1917. Several of the Lewis gunners were talking to the 15th Brigade Machine Gunners when a shell burst amongst them, and killed several, including McKinney. He came over from Victoria with the 7th Reinforcements to the 29th Battalion, and joined the Battalion (5th Platoon) about December or January.” Buried Beaumetz Cross Roads Cemetery, Beaumetz-les-Cambrai, France, Grave A.42
