Private Richard Joseph Moroney (Service No:4862) enlisted in the AIF on 24 August 1915, and was attached to 4th Infantry Battalion on 8 March 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for Suez on board the Star of England. Sue Johnson (Great Granddaughter) wrote  ' They all went down to the Quay to see him off - streamers, tears, frantic waves - and young Molly, the baby, cried more than anyone' (Sun Herald; 14 December 1980; p34). Private Moroney was attached to 5th Pioneer Battalion on 19 June 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Alexandria for Marseilles and service on the Western Front. Embarking from England for Sydney on 27 April 1919 on board HT Runic, Private Moroney was attached to 5th Pioneer Battalion at Discharge on 27 July 1919.

Born in Liverpool, New South Wales in 1885, Dick was second of seven children of Richard Joseph Moroney Snr (b1856 at Raymond Terrece, New South Wales) and Mary J McFettridge (b1860 in Grafton, New South Wales). Richard Snr (a Bricklayer) and Mary (a Midwife) married in 1884 in Sydney, where they settled, and raised their family -  Richard Snr was a Bricklayer and Mary a Midwife. 

Dick worked as a Bricklayer in Sydney where, in 1904 he married Mary Jane Allan (b1888 in Sydney, New South Wales). Dick and Mary settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Dick was a Bricklayer. Dick played Rugby for Western Suburbs and Glebe (1908 - 1911), Following his Dicharge from the Army, Dick and Mary lived in Sydney and Orange, and divorced in 1949. Dick died in 1971 and Mary in 1980.
