William was the son of William ARMSTRONG & Jane ADAMSON and was born on the 5th of April 1889 in Launceston, TAS. William was a painter.

William married Florence Daisy WILLIS in 1910 in Victoria.

Florence was the daughter of Joseph Stevens WILLIA & Maria SMITH and was born on the 21st of January 1889 in Peep Hill, Kapunda, SA.

They moved to 29 McKenzie Street, West Brunswick, VIC.

William enlisted into the 6th Field Artillery Brigade on the 12th of July 1915 in Melbourne, VIC and was allotted the service number 8668. He listed Florence as his next of kin.

William embarked aboard the “Persic” for Suez on the 22nd of November 1915, disembarking on the 21st of December.

His unit was involved in the fighting in Armentieres. 

In May 1916, whilst at Bois Grenier, he was admitted to the 5th Field Ambulance, suffering from Mumps and returned to his unit 9 days later.

He was then involved in Pozieres, Mouquet Farm, Flers and Guedecourt.

Twelve months later, he was admitted to the 34th Field Ambulance, suffering from inflammation in the connective tissue of his right thumb. He was transferred to the 9th General Hospital in Rouen and then to Tooting Military Hospital, England. From here he was transferred to the 3rd Auxiliary Hospital. He was then granted furlough for 14 days, but returned sick to hospital.

William was admitted to the 9th Australian Field Ambulance on the 17th of February 1918, suffering from Tachycardia. He was then transferred to the 7th Canadian General Hospital and the 6th Convalescent Depot. After 6 weeks he was discharged to duty.

William returned to Australia aboard the “Runic” on the 10th of June 1919. On his return to Australia he suffered from Tachycardia.

William was discharged on the 5th of October 1919.

In 1920, William was living in Ascot Vale.

William was employed by the South Australian Railways.

He was a member of the RSL (badge 11208)

They lived at 19 Anstey Crescent, Galway Gardens.

William died on the 1st of October 1947 in the Dawes Park Repatriation Hospital and is buried in the Centennial Park Cemetery; Catholic, Path 4, Plot 186B.

Florence died on the 29th of March 1954 in the Dawes Park Repatriation Hospital, SA and is buried in the Centennial Park Cemetery; Catholic, Path 4, Plot 186B.
