Austin Ferguson was born on 26th December 1888 at Prahran Victoria to parents Duncan Ferguson and Mary Anne Hamilton, he was one of five siblings with one brother and three sisters.
The exact date when the family moved to Western Australia is unknown, but it is believed around late 1890’s when Austin was ten years of age, with the family moving to the Subiaco Claremont area.
In 1903 Austin’s father was the proprietor of news agency in Wellington Street Perth.
On leaving school Austin was employed by the Lands Department as a draughtsman.
In 1913 Austin married a Pauline Kennedy at Subiaco with three children, two girls and one boy.
In April 1915 Austin enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.), conducting his training at Blackboy Hill, attached to 11th Battalion.
In June 1915 he embarked for overseas service from Fremantle for Egypt.
Arriving in Egypt he then embarked for Gallipoli in August 1915. Whilst there he was struck down with typhoid where he was sent to a hospital in Malta where he was transferred to a hospital in England.
On discharged from hospital Austin proceeded overseas to France, rejoining his battalion, and promoted to Lance Corporal in July 1917.
By September 1917 the battalion had moved to Belgium in preparation for the third battle of Ypres.
It was on the 20th September 1917 that Austin with the battalion where holding the front line in the front of Glencorse Wood when they came under artillery fire.
Austin was in the trench when a shell dropped on the edge, wounding Austin in the groin and leg.
He was carried out of the trench and taken to a Regimental Aid Post where he was transferred to a field
hospital.
Lance Corporal Austin Ferguson service number 2367 of 11th Battalion succumbed to his wounds on the 21stSeptember 1917 at the 1st Australian Field Ambulance Dickebusch Belgium. He was 28 years of age.
He is buried in Huts Cemetery Belgium and is remembered with honour.
