Biography

Stanley was my Great Uncle.  He was English , born in Ipswich, Suffolk, but  the family moved to Norfolk. living just outside Norwich.   Sometime between 1901 and 1911 he went to Australia , working as an engineer on  various ships.   I do not know if he changed citizenship becoming Australian or not.

A very basic outline of his war record ....He joined the AIF, fighting t at Gallipoli , being returned to Australia due to illness, mainly  chest infections .....  after  " recovering "  for a year I think it was ,  he was sent to France . where he was hit in the head by shrapnel  ( possibly at Hamel ? )  suffering a fractured skull.  He was  unconcious for 36 hours then operated on at Rouen,  eventually returning to Australia after a spell of recovery in the UK.   I have his service records from the National Archives which include his doctors notes... they  make very sad reading .... on top of all that he had shell shock , finally passing away in Randwick Hospital from TB ( from  the trenches of Gallipoli ? ) and Exhaustion , he is buried in a War Grave in  Rookwood Necropolis.

He married an Australian lady ...Edith May Huxtable in 1915, probably when he was home recovering, before returning to his unit in France. and as far as I can find out he never had any children...she remarried and died  1947 again as far as I can find out with no children.

I live at the moment on The Rock of Gibraltar, so  unfortunately I cannot visit his grave or the National Memorial, however the  lovely people at the Memorial have put a poppy beside his name for me, as he has no family in Australia, and his name would otherwise never have a poppy beside it.    I have tried to find more on his wife or her family , just in case there is someone who has heard of Stanley, but as yet havent been successful.  I keep trying as well to see if there  any photos of the 13th AIF, or any of soldiers from NSW, but unlucky  so far !

Stanley's sister Violet was  a very decorated Asst Matron / Sister ... 23rd General Hospital  Alexandria and HMHS Dunluce  Castle, I just hope that they managed to  meet as Stanley was  in hospital in Cairo at one point.   I have two other Great Uncles  killed,in WW1 . Stanley's brother in law Cyril is remembered on Ploegsteert Memorial, and  my Great Uncle Edgar is buried not far from Hamel, also  my Grandfather was gassed ,   survived, but suffered terribly  as a result of this.

Best wishes from  a not very sunny and very un Mediterranian like Rock of Gibraltar
