Returned Veteran of The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, will be officially commemorated with a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque to be placed at the gravesite, Honour and Dignity to be restored.
Private John Joseph Egan, 13th Battalion and 4th Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-2149), carpenter's labourer (moulder, Hughes Potteries, Merewether, N.S.W.) from 60 Patrick Street, Merewether, New South Wales and 46 Patrick Street, Merewether, N.S.W., laid to rest on the 15th November 1944, age 58. CATHOLIC 1-K Com. 15.
Wounded in action - 3.8.1916 (GSW neck), 17.10.1917 (GSW left calf).
Mr Egan’s name has been inscribed on the The Junction Soldiers' Memorial, Newcastle South Public School Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
