Biography contributed by John Oakes

Sydney (or Sidney) Bryant MARSDEN was born on 22nd June 1894 at Glebe in Sydney. On 1st July 1913 he joined the NSW Government Railways and Tramways as a cleaner (casual) in the Locomotive Branch, based at Harden. While he was officially based at Harden, an annotation on his record card suggests that he was actually located at Cowra. On 22nd June 1914 his position was made permanent. On 22nd August 1914 he was granted leave to join the Expeditionary Forces.

He joined the AIF on 25th August 1914 with the rank of Private (Service Number 501) and was allocated to the 3rd Infantry Battalion. For his next of kin, he nominated Mr William Parker of Ashfield in Sydney, who was not a relative.

With the 3rd Infantry Battalion, he embarked for Egypt aboard HMAT A14 ‘Euripides’ at Sydney on 20th October 1914 and the Battalion arrived in Egypt on 2nd December 1915. He embarked at Alexandria for the Gallipoli Campaign on 5th April 1915.

The 3rd Infantry Battalion took part in the Anzac landings on 25 April 1915, as part of the second and third waves. The Battalion continued in action at Gallipoli and, sometime between 6 and 13 June 1915, Bryant was killed in action.

His military record indicates he was buried at Death Trap Gully, but as the site of his grave could not be identified subsequently, he is commemorated at the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey.

In the early 1920s, when the time came to distribute war medals, the Army was unable to find any blood relatives of Bryant, despite exhaustive enquiries, and his medals were sent to Mr William Parker, his originally nominated next of kin.
