Frederick Harold BATES was born in Palmer's Island (north east of Grafton), NSW, on 20th February 1894, to parents Frederick William and Catherine Josephine (nee STANHOPE) BATES.
A married 21 year old storeman at the time, Frederick enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in Holsworthy NSW on 22nd October 1915, and was allocated regimental number 11038. After completing his recruit training at Liverpool, he was assigned to the 14th reinforcements of the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade as a Gunner. Frederick and his Unit embarked in Sydney aboard HMAT "Osterley" on 15th January 1916 for active service overseas.
On 22nd March 1916, Frederick was transferred to the 12th Field Artillery Brigade, and was promoted to the rank of Bombardier with the 47th Battery three months later, in France.
On 9th February 1919, Frederick embarked in England aboard the HMAT "Ascanius", for return to Australia for demobilisation. He was discharged in the 2nd Military District, Sydney, on 7th June 1919, and was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his service.
Frederick and his wife Marie Lucinda (nee KERIN) had 4 sons, Edward (born 1914), Frederick (born 1915), Donald (born 1921) and Keith (born 1922). Frederick junior died in 1924, aged just 9 years, after being accidentally hit by a truck as he played in front of his Belmore home. Both Donald and Keith served in the 2nd AIF, but Donald was later killed in Summer Hill in a tragic accident on 16th January 1946, aged 24, when his arm was severed by the wingtip of a plane being transported by road for disposal. Frederick died in Concord on 17th July 1964, aged 70, and is buried in the Rookwood Catholic Cemetery at Lidcombe, New South Wales.
